LAHORE: Director General Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Maj Gen Asif Ghafor, on Thursday, told the media that the Punjab Rangers were ordered to take charge of the accountability court where the ousted premier Nawaz Sharif was summoned to a hearing of a corruption case against him.
While answering a question regarding the deployment of rangers at the court he said, “It is not necessary for every order to be written”.
His answer was in reference to the controversy that arose after the Rangers stopped Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal from entering the court during the case proceeding against the former prime minister.
He was addressing a press conference at General Headquarters in Rawalpindi, following the return of Chief of Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa from Kabul on Sunday.
Mej Gen Asif Ghafor claimed that 50 percent of the Afghan territory is out of Kabul’s control.
“Faced with strategic threats on the western border by Tehreek-e-Taliban and other such non-state actors, it is necessary for us to keep our army deployed at the border,” he said.
He further said that Afghanistan is in a state of war form the last four decades and the war is also affecting Pakistan.
“There are no organised bases of any terrorist group on Pakistani soil,” he asserted.
He also explained that the deployment of forces at the border is not a move against Afghanistan or Iran but against non-state actors.
The DG ISPR also praised the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) for its effective role in countering terrorism.
